My grandfather was William Hubert Rowden. His father was Alfred Rowden and mother Alice Mary Foreman. He migrated from Whitsable, Kent UK to Sydney Australia in 1913. He joined the Fire Brigade. I have found his family tree online. What a find it was! Thankyou to those who put it all together. However, I'm stuck searching for the parents of Mary Rogers, whom was William Huberts grandmother. I realise this is a Rowden family message board, but I'm hoping there is someone out there along the same line as myself who would be able to assist. Thanks for this great site!

Trevor Lloyd   30/01/2011 08:27 Wellington, New Zealand.
It was a great surprise and a thrill to find this site. I am trying to trace any familly connected with a Muriel Rowden who gave birth to my mother, née May Rowden, at Wellington, NZ on 7 May 1905. This was an illegitimate birth and the birth certificate gives the mother's name but not the father's. My mother, a school teacher, married my father, Alfred Henry Lloyd, a farmer of Manaia, Taranaki in 1932 and had four children of whom I am the eldest. My mother died in 1945. I and my siblings would be very keen to hear from any relative of Muriel. I presume she was a New Zealander but I suppose it was possible that she was Australian and came to NZ for the birth.

Kia ora. I would like to make a couple of corrections to our family tree and add new information. My Great-Grandfather, George Rowden's two daughters, Rachel and Jane were to his first wife, Jeannie. His children to his second wife, Ellen Weldrick are as follows: George (1887-1963-my grandfather), Ellen Gertrude (b.1890), Elizabeth (b.1892), Mary Anne (1894-1960 m. Henry Booth), Richard Weldrick (1896-1969, m.Florence Walton), Robert (1898-1970, m.Daisy Johnson). My grandfather and all his family immigrated to NZ in 1959-60. His brother Robert and his family immigrated to Tasmania, Australia. His daughter, Meta, still lives there. They all came from Dublin, Ireland. The furtherest I have been able to go back is to George (1)'s father William who married Rachel Gray. William's father possibly was Henry who married a Sarah Wakeham. Thanks

Site very well set out. Only found it today. Setting out for england on monday. Wife descended from Susanah Rowden (see William Rowden 1700-?) Her daughter Betty Thomas was a convict... and a very interesting lady. Married a Bayliss in Australia (niceties of previous marriages overlooked given Australia's circumstances). Will be visiting the "Tree House" in Exeter and staying a week near Lifton.

My mother's mother was Ellen Mary Rowden, born in 1877 in Kensington London to William John Rowden and Mary Jane Stevens. William was born in St Pancras Middlesex in 1849, he was born to William John Rowden and Elizabeth Hannah Tucker. With the help of a recently newly found 3rd cousin our search has taken us back to 1723 although a lot has still to be verified.

This is a great site. My connection is with the Stuckeys. Ann Hill was married to William Stuckey. William had a brother John Stuckey b. 1805. He married Betsy Parish. The parents of John and William were John Stuckey (13 Oct 1777 - 1830) and Ann Passmore (b.1776 - 19 Jan 1854) Johns parents were ? Stuckey (abt 1750) and Grace ? (abt 1750) Our John Stuckey and Betsy Parish had three children - George, John and Elizabeth. George and John came to Australia in 1855 (Can't find out what happened to John, and Elizabeth died about 2 years old) George married Catherine Davies in Ballarat and then they went to Walhalla in Victoria. They had 9 children, 2 of whom died in childhood. One of their daughters was my grandmother. I will supply details of the DOBs etc if you are interested. Thank you for your fine work. Kind regards Terry Francis

Big changes since I last touched base with this site. There are so many of us with the ENGLISH connection, GOD only knows why we came so far from home????? Anyway, there is so much to share if you can afford the time to travel on the NET!!!!! Trust those that seek to help you in your quest and touch all points of the map in your duty to uphold, at days end you will have found your goal..........
Hello FAMILY As I have travelled around this WORLD I have met many ROWDENS all of them have an incredibly strong attraction to their lineage and indeed their name, but if we do not connect then it all falls to nothing in the eyes of future relevance.... does it not ????? Listen up you guys, many are the ROWDENS in life and many are the deeds, both good and bad that they can lay claim to. However stronger is the name than the things bestowed upon it, know that you will carry it to your graves, be it good or bad!!!!! What you chance to place against the name is purely your own interpretation of its longevity. Chance not to stray too far from the reason WHY you were born. Love to all Robert John Rowden catch me-----
FAMILY Please feel free to contact those of us who gave up the mother land to find a better life in the COLONYS. The natives are restless, but then again how much damage can you do with a rugby ball, WHAT is a haka.. nothing more than a war-dance YEAH!!!!!!!! right. Anyway, to all the Family in SOUTHAMPTON I wish you well. to the Rowdens? Pullens in FROME Somerset , I wish you all well too. Remember you ROWDENS, the longevity of the name depends on you all....... DICK TURPIN was proud of you all. Who of you cannot say they have not burnt down a famous public building ????? I know I have. Make your mark in life while you can guys, and damn tomorrow. ROBERT JOHN ROWDEN

I have been unable to recognise some of the names listed here, however I am sure my father would know more than me. I would like to know who were the first ROWDENS to move to the north east?

Never knew there were so many ROWDENS, I am Kiwi born and bred but father Alan moved here many years ago from Gateshead. Went to the North East a few years back and had a ball meeting family and popping down to the local for a jar. I struggled wih the language however as well as the weather but after watching a couple of series of oz and the boys on auf wedersen pet I was not surprised. Just a note to say ki ora and hello to all other ROWDENS.

Julia Rowden Johnstone   26/04/2001 00:19 Ellerslie Auckland New Zealand
I am a descendant of Rosina Agnes Stoddart born Wellington New Zealand Aug. 4th 1840 who was the 7th pakeha (european child) born Wellington and Arthur Edward Rowden (II)Born 1837 in England. They had Arthur Edward Rowden (III)born New Zealand in the 1860's. One of his children was my mother Moyra Frances Rowden born Sept. 12th 1906. This ROWDEN family originated from Cuxham Oxfordshire England. The ROWDEN family's name originated from the name ROUDON (FROM FRANCE). The name was anglicised because of the animosity between France and England when the Roudon family arrived in England in about 1200. Any family members from Arthur Edward Rowden or siblings please contact me. JULIA ROWDEN-JOHNSTONE
Julia Rowden Johnstone   14/02/2001 21:35 Ellerslie Auckland NewZealand
Descendant from Arthur Edward Rowden I born U.K. Arthur Edward Rowden II born New Zealand in 1860's. Arthur Edward I married Rosina Agnes Stoddart, born Wellington New Zealand 1840 (4th white child born in Wellington NZ.)Arthur Edward Rowden II married Mary Jane Mitchell. They had four children -Kathleen Elva Rowden, Rosina Agnes Stoddart Rowden,Edward Mitchell Rowden,Moyra Frances Rowden. Frances or Francis is a common name throughout the generations dating back to 1300. Rowden originated from the name ROUDON from France. Because of animosity between England and France the name was anglicised. I note in family tree dating back to 1300 that the Baskervilles were intermarried with the Rowdens(Sherlock Holmes!!) I have family tree with all names dating back to that time (1290). Anyone interested??? Would be interested in hearing from NZ Rowdens from early Wellington days (1840's), Are there any family members New Zealand apart from Auckland which I know.
Postscript to my guest book signing. Our family was originally from CUXHAM -so interested in hearing from that side of the family or anyone else. Will be adding "famous Rowdens" when next I write from family tree.My side "hobknobbed" with royalty -one being personal physician to a king in 1300. Don't think there were any vagrants on our side !!!!!!!!!! Most of the others were Ministers of Religion -they would curl their toes up if they knew I never went inside a church except for funerals and weddings !!!!!!!

my mother was a alice rowden born whitstable kent 1902. friend of family tells how the name rowden came about. it sems the family originated from spain. in 1400 the family left spain because of unrest and went to argentina. in1600 the family wanted to go back to spain by boat. they missed the country and finished up at whitstable. here they made a new name for themselves. they had rowed aboat and on reaching whitstable found themselves a den. so together they produced ROWDEN. this information has been passed on to me by family friend who took an interest in family histories chris

New Zealand is home to a very few Rowdens; as far as we know we are one of only two (extended) family groups in the country. My great-grandfather, Alfred Rowden, settled in the tiny town of Eketahuna in the Wairarapa region. My father, another Ian Rowden, could probably tell you more. Thanks for the effort!

I was surfing the net when I came across your site. I was very impressed with it's set up. Being a ROWDEN living in Australia I may have more relatives than I know about. I came to be in Australia when my parents migrated here in Jan. 1963. Should anyone want any information on my Rowden family history please email me. Regards Ron Rowden Perth Western Australia

My family came to Australia in the 1960s. The family has connections with Kent. This is fascinating material. I'm really amazed at the extent of the connections and records.

Hi there, I too am tracing my family tree-RODAN, and Rowden is one of the closet names I have seen yet. My Australian family tree starts back in 1853 when Charles Rodan, who was 18/19 at the time, arrived in Sydney as an assisted passenger from Ireland. Spelling variations of my family name are Roddan, Rodden, Roden & Rodan. Most records list the name as RODAN. If anyone has any connections, drop me an email. Cheers & good luck with your search.
